GIS - Henderson's hat trick

Aberdeen's Joanna Henderson won her third successive singles title this weekend, at the Scottish Junior International 14 and under event at Craiglockhart, Edinburgh (Saturday 14 July).

In beating England's Danieka Borthwick 6-1 6-1 in the final (and shortly afterwards she teamed up with England's Dena Daly to lift the doubles title) 13 year old Henderson has now amassed a winning streak of 15 singles and seven doubles wins.

Her other singles victories came at last week's Scottish Open and at the ETA event in Denmark the week before.“It is a great achievement for Joanna to win three tournaments in a row,” said Scotland's national coach, Eleanor Lightbody.  “It is a great experience to play against people from so many different countries and being successful week after week shows mental strength and application that bodes well for her future.”

GIS Joanna HendersonHenderson, who won the British under 14 clay court title at Solihull in June, has made many changes to her game this year.  Whilst coach, Kris Soutar has fined tuned the technical aspects, a support team of physios and Strength & Conditioning coaches at the Grampian Institute of Sport have worked on the physical aspects.

“By 16 years old your technique needs to be perfect so you can focus solely on winning, so we're getting everything right now,” said Joanna.  “Kris has made changes on my serve and on my forehand, changing my grip slightly.

“The improvements I have made with the physio in a short space of time have been extraordinary.  The physiotherapy is helping my muscles get ready to do the Strength & Conditioning work.  I'm much more powerful and my game is a lot more positive.”

Henderson, who can expect her ETA 14 and under world ranking of 98 to rise next week, will have a further opportunity to flex her muscles against international competition in just over a week's time in an ETA event in Paris, the first leg of the five stage Young Stars Tournament, which will also take her to Belgium and Germany.
