WSIS - Four boxers talent spotted for West of Scotland Institute

Four of the region's most talented young boxers will be supported along their sporting pathways after being called up by the West of Scotland Institute of Sport this month.

The West of Scotland Institute of Sport is part of the Area Institutes of Sport network that supports Scottish governing body-identified athletes by providing high performance expertise.  The network's expert teams work together to deliver essential support services locally in sports medicine, sports science, strength and conditioning, and career and lifestyle guidance.

Boxing is a new sport to the Institute network that supports around 370 athletes.  Joe Kelso (Cumnock), Lee Gallacher (Wishaw), Jonathan Slowey (Glasgow) and Robert Wright (Glasgow) are amongst its first recruits.

The four boxers have been selected for their potential to compete in major international events such as the Commonwealth Games.  Three of them made their mark in Europe this summer.

Seventeen year old Robert Wright, a 48kg Light flyweight, won a silver medal at the European Cadet Championships this summer and is a member of theGB Development Squad.

Jonathan Slowey (17), a 57kg Featherweight, won a bronze medal at the European Cadet Championships this summer.

Light welterweight, 64kg Lee Gallacher (18) won a bronze medal at the EU (European Union) Junior Championships in Poland this summer.

Twenty one year old Joe Kelso, a 60kg Lightweight, has won the Scottish Senior Championship the last two years.

“The Institute system will be brand new to the boxers and a great asset to them and their coaches,” said National Coach, Kevin Smith.

“Being a member of the West Institute will give them access to specialist support such as nutrition, Strength & Conditioning and medical care.  It's not just to help the boxers.  It will help the coaches and have a ripple effect for lots of other boxers that they coach.”
