Aberdeen boxer, Darren Traynor will be supported along his sporting pathway after being called up by the Grampian Institute of Sport this month.
The Grampian Institute is part of the Area Institutes of Sport network that supports Scottish governing body-identified athletes by providing high performance expertise. The network's expert teams work together to deliver essential support services locally in sports medicine, sports science, strength and conditioning, and career and lifestyle guidance.
Boxing is a new sport to an Institute network that supports around 370 athletes. Twenty-one year old Traynor, Scotland's Senior Flyweight Champion and former Scottish Schoolboys Champion, is one of a group of boxers from across the country selected by the network for their potential to compete in major international events such as the Commonwealth Games.
The Institute system will be brand new to the boxers and a great asset to them and their coaches, said National Coach, Kevin Smith.
Being a member of the Institute network will give them access to specialist support such as nutrition, Strength & Conditioning and medical care. It's not just to help the boxers. It will help the coaches and have a ripple effect for lots of other boxers that they coach.
