AIS - Muirheads qualify for World Championships

Blair Atholl's Glen and Eve Muirhead reinforced their family's international curling legacy after both brother and sister skipped their teams to success at the Scottish Junior Curling Championships at Perth on Sunday.

By winning these titles Glen (19) and Eve (17), whose father Gordon was a member of the British team that competed in the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in France (finishing fifth), will lead their teams to the World Junior Championships in Ostersund, Sweden (1-9 March 2008).

Eve MuirheadEve will return to the event as the reigning world champion together with her 2007 team mate and fellow Scottish Institute of Sport supported Sarah Macintyre (Kilbochie, Highland).   Kerry Barr (Edinburgh, East of Scotland Institute of Sport) and Vicki Adams (Lochans, Stranraer, Central Scotland Institute of Sport) are newcomers to the team.  Vicki Adams' older sister, Kay (Central Scotland Institute of Sport), has been brought in as the fifth player.

Glen was also a competitor at the 2007 World Junior Championships, in Minnesota, as a member of the Scottish boys' team that narrowly missed out on a place in the semi finals.  Like his sister he moved up to skip this season and the results have been spectacular.

“It's working very well and we've won everything we've entered so far this year,” said Glen, who as a Tayside & Fife Institute of Sport supported athletes has access to expert teams that work together to deliver essential support services locally in sports medicine, sports science and strength and conditioning training.

“We've played three events in this country which we won and we went to Novia Scotia and won that as well.”
Glen's team comprises his Blair Atholl neighbour, the fellow Tayside & Fife Institute of Sport supported Scott MacLeod, together with Scott Andrews (Prestwick, North Ayrshire, West of Scotland Institute of Sport), and Gordon McDougall (Balloch, West Dunbartonshire).  David Reid, from Beith, North Ayrshire (West of Scotland Institute of Sport), has been brought in as the fifth man for the World Championships.

At Perth last week team (Glen) Muirhead lost just one match in the round robin stages, against team Drummond from Forfar.  Ironically this was the same team they faced in the final but their second meeting was a very different story. Muirhead started confidently, establishing a 4-1 lead.  When Drummond was just too heavy with his last stone draw in the fifth, allowing Muirhead a steal to go 5-1 ahead, there was no way back. Down 7-3 after nine, Drummond and his team offered the handshake.

“We were very defensive in that round robin game but we changed it and went at them in the final,” said Glen. Team (Eve) Muirhead maintained its unbroken run through the week long event by beating team Sloan of Lockerbie 8-5.  She admits her new role of skip is “totally different because you have most of the pressure for your final shot but I like it and we get on very well.”

Unsurprisingly, both Eve and Glen will only be completely satisfied if they both return home this year with the gold medals. For the time being they are both enjoying being the first brother and sister skips to hold a Scottish title.

“Last year was the first time that a brother and sister played in the same team at the Worlds,” said Glen. “So to have us both skipping this year has definitely never happened before.”
