WSIS - Reid hits world top 40

There seems to be no stopping Helensburgh's wheelchair national tennis champion, Gordon Reid, this season.

On Sunday the Helensburgh 16 year old won the singles title at the North East tournament in Sunderland, the second British-based world ranking event of the 2008 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour.

Reid, who had reached a career singles high of 51 in last week's rankings, upset the top three seeds to gain his fourth singles title of the year, earning himself a place inside the world's top 40 for the first time ever.

In Sunday's final he beat 19 year old David Phillipson, the second seed from England who was competing in the event as Britain's youngest No 1 men's player.

Reid narrowly missed out on his fourth doubles title. Partnering Phillipson in the top seeded slot, the Brits lost the final to as top seeds Hungarian Laszlo Farkas and Stephane Goudou from France. But, in reaching the final, Reid raised his world doubles ranking to a career high of 30.

One of the newest inductees into the West of Scotland Institute of Sport, Reid is supported towards his goals by high performance expertise in the form of essential support services in sports medicine, sports science, strength and conditioning, and career and lifestyle guidance.
