WSIS - Stewart wins Boys Championship

Troon's Michael Stewart overcame fellow West of Scotland Institute of Sport supported Paul Shields from Kirkhill 8&7 in the final of the Scottish Boys Championship at Southerness this weekend.

“This is the big one for me, it has not quite sunk in yet but it is a really good way to start off my season,” said Stewart afterwards.

“Considering how long this week has been and the standard of golf out there today, I am sure we must have provided good entertainment all the way round for the spectators. I was getting tired towards the end, but my putts went in at the right time and that was all that mattered.”

WSIS - Stewart - golfSaid Shields: “I was tiring over the last few holes this morning and then made a lazy shot at the first this afternoon. Michael then had a great pitch at the second which I three putted.

“He ground me down, I started making stupid mistakes because I was tired and getting beaten. I finished birdie, birdie to lose and I am glad I ended my campaign that way, but Michael played very well. It was his day and I have to hold my hands up. He was a true champion out there.”

Stewart, who heads for a golf scholarship at East Tennessee State University in August this year, has his sights set on the Stroke Play Championship hosted at Blairgowrie in July before he is bound for the US.

“The Stroke Play title will be just as hard to win,” he said.  “Again it will be a long week but when I go there I will give it my best shot.”

SGU National Junior Coach Spencer Henderson, coach to both of the Scottish Boys finalists, said after the tournament, “Today we witnessed some great golf from two of our best up and coming golfers. They both played incredibly well and Paul can take come consolation from the fact he has another attempt on this title next year when it is hosted at Royal Aberdeen.

“Michael's win is testament to his hard work and dedication. He has a great work ethic both on and off the course and I am absolutely delighted for him. He handled the pressure of coming into this tournament as the favourite and proved that he was the champion of the field.”

Stewart now heads for the McEvoy Trophy this week along with his Quadrangular team mates, semi finalist David Law and Sam McLaren.
