Ruth's professional background is in social work, but having a lifelong love of sport and outdoor activities, she seized the opportunity to become a contracted athlete adviser in 1998, and completed the graduate certificate in Athlete Career and Education Management. She is now employed part-time and based in the East of Scotland Area Institute.
Ruth completed the extra-curricular Award in Physical Education while studying at Edinburgh University. She played netball for the University and Scottish Universities, and at different times has enjoyed participating in competitive hockey, tennis, volleyball and athletics. She supported her two sons who both competed internationally at junior and youth level in windsurfing. She still maintains her involvement in RYA Scotland, and enjoys walking, cycling, sailing, sea-kayaking and skiing when the opportunity arises.
