Bad day for Scots at the Amateur

Scotland's hopes at the Amateur Golf Championship (16 - 21 June) evaporated for another year at Turnberry on Thursday (19 June) with defeats for two leading contenders and the end of Scottish Institute of Sport supported golfer Steven McEwan's battling campaign.
The 20-year-old from had a good scrap with top-ranked Italian Andrea Pavan in the last 16 but joined fellow Institute supported athletes Callum Macaulay and Kevin McAlpine who exited at the second round stage in the morning.

Steven McEwanMcEwan, the winner of the Scottish Boys' Strokeplay title at Monifieth three years ago, had a comfortable second round victory over Jake Amos in the morning but ran into one of the tournament favourites in Pavan.

The 19-year-old from Rome never trailed in the third round tie, getting to three-up after seven only to see McEwan fight back to one-down after 13, but the Italian had a little too much.

“I had five bogeys, which is just too many against a player of his calibre,'' said McEwan.

“I'm pleased with the way I played this week and it gives me a bit of confidence for the rest of the season, but obviously I'd like to have got further.''

Both McAlpine and Macaulay had particular reason to rue their last 32 defeats having been in position to win their games, against Canadian David Markle and Liverpudlian John Carroll respectively.
