Ewan Scott has become the first Scottish player to win the English Under-14 Stroke Play Championship.

The St Andrews 14-year-old shot a closing 73 at The Kendleshire in Gloucestershire to win The Reid Trophy by two shots from playing partner Aaron Rai and Spain’s Mario Galiano.

Going into the final day Ewan had a one stroke advantage but dropped shots at three of the first four holes to fall behind.

“I was still three down going into the 13th where I made an eagle and he made abogie, which made it all level,” said Ewan, who is coached by Steve North at St Andrews Links Golf Academy. “I beat him on the final five holes and ended up beating him by two.

“But I didn’t think I’d won until the last putt dropped. I’m over the moon and as the first Scot to win the title I’ve created a bit of history.”

Ewan has been supported by the Tayside and Fife Institute of Sport for the past two seasons.  Through TFIS he receives Strength & Conditioning coaching from Debby Sargent at St Andrews University and Performance Lifestyle advice from Colin Robertson.

“The Strength & Conditioning has made a huge difference,” said Ewan who has reduced his handicap from three to scratch this season. “I’ve started hitting the ball much further and I really noticed that this week when I was hitting the ball 30 to 40 yards past my opponents. They also give me fitness testing and soon they’ll be giving me advice on nutrition.”

A member of the Scotland team that won the Boys Under-16 Quadrangular event in Wales earlier this season he is hoping this win will help him towards future honours.

“This is my biggest win yet and it is what I wanted at the start of the year. I finished second in the Scottish Under 14 Championship and fourth in the Under 16 back home so this is a highlight. Hopefully this will have an effect back in Scotland and I’ll be picked for the Under 16 international with England.”
