Top technical coach for Scotland's bowlers

The sportscotland institute of sport has today (2 July) announced another new initiative to prepare Scotland's athletes for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi later this year. Robbie Dobbins, 1982 Commonwealth Games lawn bowls gold medallist, will take on the newly created position of technical coach for bowls, in partnership with the Scottish Bowling Association (SBA) and the Scottish Women's Bowling Association (SWBA).

Australian Robbie Dobbins joins the team on Monday 5 July where he will work with High Performance Manager Ceri Ann Davies, to provide technical and tactical training to the bowlers in the run up to Delhi.

Dobbins is former coach to both the Australian and Malaysian national bowling teams,  who will be among the strongest challengers to Scotland’s medal hopes in Delhi.  However Scotland's bowlers have an impressive Commonwealth Games track record and Dobbie's inclusion is intended to add a new dimension to the high performance programme to enable Scotland's bowlers to continue their winning ways.

Mike Whittingham, Director of High Performance at the sportscotland institute of sport said: “As we help our Commonwealth sports finalise their preparations for Delhi, we are keen to support new initiatives which add value.

“Robbie Dobbins will join the team as a special expert consultant and we hope he offers a cutting edge insight into areas that are crucial for medal winning performance.  We know that the SBA and SWBA are like us, keen to find that competitive edge”.

SBA CEO Alan McMillan, said “The SBA is extremely proud of Scottish bowling’s record that has seen our men bring back seven gold medals from the last seven Commonwealth Games and this appointment is further evidence that no stone is being left unturned in our bid to add to that medal haul.”

Dobbins will work closely with the Scottish  Bowling Association and Scottish Women’s  Bowling Association to support the high performance programme for bowls.
