Dundee 18 year old, Scott Malone, who is close to recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in September, finished the 2006 judo season on a high note by winning the bronze medal in last weekend's British Senior Judo Championships in Sheffield.
As far as season ends go it could not have been better for Malone, who had never previously won a medal at British senior level.
In his fight for the under 60kg bronze medal he beat the reigning champion, Brett Caswell, pinning the Englishman to the mat well inside the time limit.
Everybody in the weight category was named, they are players who everybody knows, so I was just hoping to get a medal, said Malone, who has been helped back from injury with physio support from the Tayside & Fife Institute of Sport.
It's been a good year; the season starts again in February and I'll be training in the meantime.
Andy McInroy, judo coach to Malone since he first set foot on a mat as an 11 year old, puts his pupil's latest medal in perspective.
This is a big achievement because Scott isn't even 19 yet, this was a senior event and he thought he didn't fight particularly well, he said. Brett Caswell is the No.1 player in Britain at under 23 level so it was good to beat him so convincingly.
Scott's had a shoulder injury since September so it's been a bit of an up and down year. He has been in the GB under 23 squad since the spring, he won a bronze in Germany at the Bremen International, won a couple of gold medals in Holland and won the Commonwealth senior tournament.
So to get the bronze in the final event is the icing on the cake.
