Edinburgh's Martin Campbell restored much needed pride to the Scottish under 17 team competing in last weekend's 2007 Home Nations Quadrangular tournament at the Welsh Institute in Cardiff by winning the singles title.

Amidst disappointing Scottish team performances in the doubles events, 16 year old Campbell secured places in the men's and mixed doubles finals before underlining his considerable potential in the singles, beating Ireland's top Sam Magee in a two-set final.

“I won the under 15 Quadrangular title two years ago so I felt I had a good chance and was capable of winning again,” said Campbell, who is supported by the East of Scotland Institute of Sport in his efforts to reach world class level.

Said his long term coach, Kenny Middlemiss:  “Martin is mentally strong, which helps him win tight matches.  Not many Scots have won this title and in any sport it's a great achievement for a Scot to win an event against the best competitors from England, Ireland and Wales.

“It also shows Badminton Scotland's lottery programme and support from East of Scotland Institute of Sport is paying off.”
