Institute-supported athletes have achieved an impressive medal tally and given some world-beating performances.

Milestones

1998 Scottish Institute of Sport is conceived by sportscotland (then Scottish Sports Council), with £20m of funding provided by the Scottish Executive through sportscotland.

1999 Appointment of High Performance Coaches

2000 Area Institute Network established

2002 Opening of new National Swimming Academy in Stirling. 22 SIS supported athletes win medals at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Rhona Martin, Debbie Knox, Fiona Macdonald, Janice Rankin and Margaret Morton win gold in Winter Olympics at Salt Lake City.

2003 Second Operating Plan approved with £16m of funding "2003 and beyond - Creating Winners".

2004 Opening of National Badminton Academy in Glasgow.
Chris Hoy wins gold, Kath Grainger and Campbell Walsh win silver at the Olympic Games in Athens.

2006 At the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, SIS supported athletes contributed 20 medals to Scottish team total of 29 - most ever Gold medals at Games (11), 9 won by Institute-supported athletes.

2008 Olympic Games in Beijing 31 Scots on Team GB, 30 of which were supported the institute and area network. 5 medals won by institute supported athletes Paralympic Games in Beijing 16 Scots on Team GB, 12 of which were supported by the institute and area network. 8 medals won by institute supported athletes.

2009 Merged with sportscotland to become 'sportscotland institute of sport.'

2010 At the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, there were 19 Scots on Team GB of a total of 52 athletes on the GB squad. All 19 were supported by the SIS.

 

Runs on the board

Since 1998 the sportscotland institute of sport has helped prepare many of Scotland's best athletes to perform on the world stage. To date, this includes 15 world champions, 5 Olympic Gold Medals and 6 Olympic Silver Medals. At the Paralympics, institute supported athletes have won 14 Gold, 17 Silver, 12 bronze Paralympic medals.  Success at Commonwealth Games  includes 22 Gold, 22 Silver and 25 Bronze medals.   In addition, 12 European Gold medals have been won and a host of junior titles.
